I myself prefer to see colts started in a bosal. But, if a bit is necessary I like a nice myler snaffle. Always check for wolf teeth prior to using a bit tho!

Bosal is the traditional way, progressing to a ringed snaffle and finally a shank bit. It's essential to be aware of what the horse responds to the best. And if you are not sure how to properly bit your horse, get a good trainer to help. Have them watch you ride - better yet, take a lesson. Your hands and application of cues are more important than the bit itself. The gentlest bit causes pain in the wrong hands. You can also expect the trainer to tell you how comfortable your horse is with a bit. Finally spend the money for a quality bit like Myler. Your horse will thank you.

You will get a million different answers to this , depending on discipline, breed, exp of trainer, etc . I personally use a SS eggbutt snaffle ( smooth/medium weight )
